Throughout their history, Manchester City have had some incredibly influential strikers join the club and change the landscape of the game as a whole.

Manchester City have had many incredible highs and disappointing lows throughout the years meaning that their lineups have been stocked full of impactful strikers.

From early on from its creation as a football club all the way through to the modern-day Premier League strikers that have graced the pitch for Manchester City, there are plenty of influential figures to have led the line during this time.

In this blog post, we are going to be ranking some of the most influential strikers to have ever played for the Manchester side and will discuss their impact on the team and the success the signing led to.

5. Erling Haaland

While it may seem hasty to place Erling Haaland on this list, there is no question of the influence that he has had on Manchester City and the Premier League already in his career.

While Manchester City were already winning Premier League titles before his signature, there is no doubt that he was one of the deciding factors that led Manchester City to secure the historic treble in the 2022/23 season.

In just his first season at the club, Erling Haaland managed to score 52 goals in 52 games in all competitions providing an incredible goal-per-game ratio since joining the club at the start of that season. 36 of these goals were bagged in the Premier League alone which means he now holds the record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season.

While he has not been at the club for as long as some of their other legendary strikers, the influence he has already had on the team can not be argued and will therefore go down in City history as the striker who finally brought the Champions League trophy to the Etihad.

4. Carlos Tevez

While Carlos Tevez may have his time at Manchester City tarnished somewhat by the months he spent on the sidelines after refusing to come on as a substitute in a tie against Bayern Munich in 2011 and his stint at Manchester United prior to his arrival but his influence was still imperative to their success.

This did leave a sour taste in the mouths of many city fans but the influence he had on the team’s success in English football is not up for debate. The transfer of Tevez was a major statement from the blue side of Manchester in the pulling power they would have moving forward.

Many consider this to be one of the major signings that led to the sustained success of Manchester City in the early 2010s which continued for the next decade. Tevez was undoubtedly an all-time great for City and will always remain rooted in the history of the club.

By the end of his tenure at Manchester City, Carlos Tevez managed to win the FA Cup in 2011, Community Shield in 2012 and Premier League in 2012. His involvement in each of these competitions has made him one of the most important strikers to have played for the club.

3. Tommy Johnson

Tommy “Tosh” Johnson sits third on the all-time top scorers list for Manchester City with 166 goals in 354 games throughout the 1920s. In the 1928/29 season, Johnson managed to net an incredible 38 goals in 39 appearances in the league which remains the greatest tally recorded by a city player in a single campaign.

Johnson joined Manchester City in August 1919 after the return of league football since the First World War concluded in 1918. He wore the number 9 shirt for the first time when he made his debut for City in February 1920 against Middlesbrough. This ended 2-0 with Johnson scoring both goals in the game.

By the end of his career at the Manchester club, Tommy Johnson only managed to accumulate a single second-division title however his goalscoring record for the club shows exactly how important he was in the history of this football club.

2. Eric Brook

When Eric Brook joined Manchester City in 1928, he was the latest in a long line of excellent forwards in the squad that he needed to prove himself under, one of which was the aforementioned Tommy Johnson.

Brook played an essential role in City’s first-ever title-winning season in 1937 and was invaluable during an excellent FA Cup run three years prior in which they won the trophy.

Over his 11-year spell at the Manchester club, Brook registered a staggering 178 goals in 496 games making him second in the all-time scoring charts for Manchester City. This feat was unsurpassable until recent years when one Sergio Aguero overtook his record.

1. Sergio Aguero

Was there ever any doubt that Sergio Aguero would top this list? He is their all-time top scorer with an incredible 260 goals in 390 games in all competitions for the Machester club.

Aguero is largely associated with the boom of success that Manchester City sustained during the early 2010 and late 2000s as it was his arrival that led to the new era of Manchester City under Roberto Mancini.

Aguero was one of the major signings alongside David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany that really cemented the Blues in Manchester as one of the challengers for league titles and Champions Leagues for many years to come.

These three were invaluable for the team. With Kompany’s leadership, Toure’s demanding presence, David Silva’s skill and Aguero’s sheer goal-scoring ability meant that they had a spine that was perfect for winning countless trophies, all of which were pivotal in City’s success for years to come.

By the end of his Manchester City career, Sergio Kun Aguero has amassed five league titles, one FA Cup, six League Cups and three Charity shields as well as countless Player of the Year awards over a ten-year spell at the club.
