The Premier League was founded 29 years ago on 20th February 1992. Since then, numerous players have carved their names into history by competing in this magnificent competition.

The Premier League is often cited as the most competitive and difficult league in the world, and there is a lot of evidence to back this up. Many of the greatest players and managers in world football struggle to achieve results in the Premier League, as it can provide them with challenges they have never faced before.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at some of the best players to ever play in the Premier League.

Thierry Henry

Theirry Henry is synonymous with the classic era of the Premier League. He played for Arsenal FC from 1999 to 2007 (with a brief return in 2012) and was an outstanding player. Creative, exciting to watch, with goal-scoring prowess.

Henry was part of the Arsenal invincibles squad went through a full season undefeated, and even the staunchest of rivals couldn’t deny his talent. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever feature in this prestigious league.

Steven Gerrard

Despite never actually winning a Premier League title, Steven Gerrard is another iconic player in Premier League history. He led Liverpool to some incredible achievements and was a hugely talented player. For many, he personifies everything that a team captain should be.

Current Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is beloved by fans, but Gerrard was a homegrown hero. He lifted the Champions League and FA Cup in front of his hometown, which is special.

There were several times Liverpool got within touching distance of the Premier League title with Gerrard as captain, but unfortunately, they never quite got there. Despite this, he will always be remembered as a legend and an amazing player with a propensity to score screamers.

Frank Lampard

The debate that raged around the time that Steven Gerrard played was as follows: Who is better, Gerrard or Lampard? Liverpool fans will say, Gerrard and Chelsea fans will say, Lampard. But the answer isn’t clear.

One thing that is clear is that Frank Lampard achieved everything there is to achieve during his time with Chelsea. He won three Premier League titles, a Champions League, Europa League, four FA Cups, and two League cups.

He also has the record for most goals scored by a midfielder in the Premier League, which is no easy feat. He went on to manage Chelsea, with success in his first season against the odds. Eventually, he was fired, but Chelsea managers get hired and fired quite ruthlessly and the fans still love him.

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer is a Newcastle United legend, but he’s also a Premier League legend. He scored the most goals by a fair margin, netting 260 times. What some people don’t know is that he actually won the Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers in 1995.

During his time at Newcastle, he came close to silverware several times but never quite managed to win a trophy. Despite this, he’s regarded as one of the best English goalscorers of all time and is a true hero for many fans.

He is currently a pundit on TV and set up the Alan Shearer Foundation, a charity to help disabled children.

Wayne Rooney

The second top goalscorer in Premier League history is Wayne Rooney, who scored a lot of goals for Manchester United and their boyhood club Everton. He burst onto the scene at the age of 16 and impressed everyone.

With tons of ability, he signed for Manchester United and went on to win everything he could with an amazing 16 trophies in total. He had a sharp footballing brain and natural ability that rival players found frustrating to deal with.

Even as a young man, Rooney was one of the most audacious players to step foot on the pitch. Unfortunately, he started to slow down in the latter part of his career due to playing through injury and various other factors. But this didn’t stop him from performing at the top level for quite some time, and he was still better than most of his younger contemporaries.

He currently manages Derby County, which is going through some tough times due to financial difficulties. Whether he can replicate his playing career success as a manager is yet to be seen.

Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes, at times, looked as if he had a symbiotic relationship with the ball. He would play some of the most unbelievable passes and make it look as if he hadn’t even tried. His no-look pass is really impressive and something that amateurs up and down the country have no doubt tried to imitate.

As part of the class of 92, he played in what many consider to be the best Manchester United side of all time. He is currently involved in some punditry and was one of the few ex-players who was harshly critical of Manchester United during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time as manager.

Roy Keane

Roy Keane is a leader through and through. A harsh and tough player, his notoriety as a hard man means that many forget just how good a player he actually was. But if he wasn’t a great player he wouldn’t have made it into the Manchester United side that won just about everything you could win.

Keane is a beloved United legend and currently serves as one of the most entertaining pundits on TV. He is well known for letting his opinions be heard, no matter who they might offend. In many ways, Keane is a player from a bygone era before social media began to dominate.

In a few years, we may look back at this current era and have a completely different list of players here including Mo Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Kevin De Bruyne, and more.
