Throughout the years, Manchester United have had some of the best players that the world has ever seen so it is natural for many people to speculate who they would have in their dream starting lineups assuming everyone is in the prime of their careers.

Throughout this blog post, we are going to be discussing our top picks for Manchester United’s greatest-ever starting 11. We have opted for a 4-4-2 formation because of the plethora of midfield talent that simply must receive a mention.

GK: Peter Schmeichel

The top choice for most Manchester United fans in goal in an ultimate 11 would be Peter Schmeichel. The Great Dane is one of the most decorated goalkeepers to ever play for Manchester United and was the one to bring an era of dominance to Manchester United in the Premier League.

Having won 5 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League title, and 1 UEFA Super Cup for Manchester United he is a staple in the vast success that the Red Devils experienced throughout the 90s. Across 566 games in all competitions, Schmeichel managed a staggering 233 clean sheets which puts him behind only David De Gea for Manchester United.

RB: Gary Neville

Another fairly inarguable entry to this ultimate 11 is Gary Neville at RB, there have been few to ever play the game that has won as much and has had as much impact as this Salford-born hero.

Gary Neville has won 8 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 2 Champions League trophies and a Club World Cup for Manchester United remaining loyal to his boyhood club throughout his career.

CB: Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has always been in the argument for the greatest defensive player ever to grace the Premier League, let alone Manchester United Centre Backs.

Ferdinand was commonly referred to as a “Rolls Royce” of a defender meaning that he simply glided across the pitch with such ease and authority that simply no one could stand up to him.

CB: Jaap Stam

Sir Alex Furguson has famously stated that one of his biggest regrets as a manager was selling Jaap Stam at the time that he did because he was the best defender he had ever had the pleasure of managing.

While not remaining at the club for very long, Stam was undoubtedly one of the most dominant CBs to ever wear a Manchester United shirt.

LB: Denis Irwin

With much of the debate online, it is common to find Denis Irwin as the best Left Back to ever play for Manchester United in most people’s lists, and ours is no different.

Irwin was a true professional, able to play in just about any position across the back line and doing an excellent job in each of those areas. Despite being right-footed, he was just as competent playing with his left when necessary making him a nightmare to try and press.

RM: David Beckham

Someone who does not seem to receive their credits as a Manchester United player on occasion is David Beckham, often not put in many people’s lists in favour of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs on either wing.

Beckham is certainly one of the greatest passers of a ball that the sport has ever seen, coming up with countless assists in vital moments and playing a key role in the famous treble-winning season in 1999.

CM: Paul Scholes

There is a reason why Paul Scholes is mentioned in debates for the greatest Midfielders to ever have graced the Premier League, he was simply magnificent. Much like Beckham, Scholes was one of the greatest distributors the world has ever seen.

Paul Scholes is certainly one of the greatest midfielders to ever live and simply had to make it into this list, having won 11 Premier League titles and countless others during his time at the Red Devils.

CM: Roy Keane

If you were to ask most English football fans who the greatest captain ever in the Premier League is, the chances are many would mention Roy Keane’s name. Despite leaving Manchester United on poor terms with Sir Alex Furguson, his legacy cannot be argued.

The iconic battles that Keane had with the likes of Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard were truly something to behold and we are likely to never see anything like them again. Keane was a one-of-a-kind midfielder and was a true great of his generation.

LM: Cristiano Ronaldo

Although it feels wrong to not include Ryan Giggs in this list, there is more than enough of an argument in favour of Cristiano Ronaldo to take his place due to his breathtaking seasons at Manchester United.

Although it is incredibly difficult to ignore what he went on to do after he departed from Manchester United, his final full season was still one of the greatest individual season performances from any Premier League player ever.

Having scored 31 games in his league campaign alone, he was a formidable force to reckon with that season and was undoubtedly one of the best players in the world. With many fans, and ten hag himself, hopeful to recreate his magic in the form of Marcus Rashford, it is no wonder Ronaldo has to be mentioned here.

ST: Wayne Rooney

One of the greatest Manchester United players of all time is Wayne Rooney. There is no doubt that Wayne Rooney should always make an all-time 11, he is the all-time leading goalscorer for the club and has won countless trophies over some of the most successful years in Manchester United’s history.

Rooney won a staggering 17 trophies during his tenure at United which included 5 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League trophy, 4 League Cups, 1 FA Cup and 1 Europa League Trophy.

This impressive haul no doubt puts him in the conversation for the greatest-ever Manchester United player.

ST: Sir Bobby Charlton

The late, great Bobby Charlton was a legend not only of the sport but of one of the biggest clubs in the world. Bobby Charlton is most notably famous for his World Cup triumph with England however his United career was just as impressive!

In 584 games for the Red Devils, Charlton scored an impressive 199 goals and won 3 league titles as well as one European Cup. Bobby Charlton is a name that often brings joy to Manchester United fans as they hold his legacy fondly.
