Manchester United have had a strange time since the departure of Alex Ferguson. Regardless of the decline, Manchester United remain one of the biggest football clubs in the world, and likely the biggest English club, it seems as though they aren’t where they should be.

The problems at the club are deep-rooted and cannot be fixed overnight. Whilst they’re certainly not in a relegation battle, it doesn’t look as though they’ll be challenging for the Premier League title any time soon despite numerous promising players within the squad.

After years of failed appointments, it seems as though the Manchester United board now have their eyes set on the future. After sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the red devils appointed Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the summer. After this, he has agreed to stay as a consultant.

The general consensus is that Rangnick has come to the club to steady the ship and plant the seeds for long-lasting future success. But what exactly is the club's vision, and who would fit that?

Clubs such as Everton are currently proving that without a clear vision you will lead teams down the drain, so it’s not likely that Manchester United will succeed if they mess up their next managerial appointment.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the potential candidates and how they can benefit Man Utd in their goal to become the dominant English club once again.

Ralf Rangnick

Some sources suggest that current manager Ralf Rangnick would like to keep his role as Manchester United manager after the summer. At the moment, this all depends on how good a job he does and whether or not he’s the right managerial decision.

It’s clear that Rangnick knows how to build a club and is excellent at identifying talented players. He has shown that with his time overseeing the various Red Bull clubs he has worked at.

What is not clear is whether or not he has the managerial ability to guide a club like Manchester United back to its former glory. There are a few points to consider.

World-class managers such as Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool side - or even Thomas Tuchel and his Chelsea squad have cited Rangnick as a major influence on their footballing philosophy and style of play. To be so influential means that he must have some sort of credibility.

Another point in Rangnick's favour is that he hasn’t had much time to implement his vision yet. He has been given a squad that hasn’t worked for several managers, so he has a big job on his hands.

Since coming onto the club he has started to give players such as Diogo Dalot and Phil Jones a chance in the first team again. If he is able to revitalise and jumpstart certain players' careers then that can only be a good thing for Man U.

Some would argue that the job is too big and that he should simply be allowed to set the foundations over the next few months before moving onto his consultant role. If this is the case, he should undoubtedly have a say in who steps into his shoes as they will need to fit the vision he is putting in place.

Erik Ten Hag

In 2019, Erik Ten Hag guided Ajax to their first Champions League semi-final since 1997, showing that he is capable of success against the top European sides too.

Some pundits believe that a young and exciting manager is the right approach for Manchester United and that Ten Hag would be the man to guide the team to their previous heights.

Whether or not he would be the best successor to Rangnick is yet to be seen, but he is certainly one of the more exciting prospects for Manchester United to consider.

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney really has his work cut out for him at Derby County right now. The club is in shambles and he has had to work with some very unusual circumstances.

Unfortunately for the Rams, they were hit with a 21 point deduction before the league began. This put them firmly at the bottom of the league and with very little chance of surviving.

Since then, Rooney has managed to pull out some excellent performances and is getting closer and closer to executing one of the greatest survival runs football has ever seen. If he was to achieve this feat, he would undoubtedly be considered for many prestigious jobs in football.

When it comes to United and Rooney, there is clearly a lot that ties them together. He is a Manchester United legend, their top goalscorer, and guided them to numerous trophies in his time at the club

Perhaps the most talented English player to have ever played the game, a lot of people would love to see Rooney take over the role of United manager if his success continues. The issue with appointing a relatively new manager is that it’s always going to be a risk and faith is needed. He definitely isn’t the finished product and this is clear to see.

Final Thoughts

Before making a decision, Manchester United needs to seriously consider what it is they want in a manager in the upcoming seasons. They need to work closely with Rangnick to start planting the seeds, as a long-term plan seems to be the best way to approach things.

For example, Manchester City set its club infrastructure up with the express intention of bringing Pep Guardiola to the club. Manchester United needs to start thinking about who they want.
