Newcastle United has recently been taken over by some of the richest owners in the world, if not the richest. It is unclear just how much money they will be able to spend in the January transfer window but based on Newcastle’s spending history, they should have a lot of wiggle room.

Some clubs struggle to buy players due to Financial Fair Play rules, but Newcastle United has been one of the lowest-spending clubs in recent years due to what many consider to be Mike Ashley’s utter negligence.

With a huge boost in funds and a new lease on life, as well as a brand new manager in Eddie Howe, the club will be looking to make a statement over the January transfer window and could bring in some seriously big names.

It can’t be forgotten that they are currently engaged in a relegation fight, so the signings have to make sense for the present and the future. So, with all that in mind, who could (and should) Newcastle buy in the January transfer window?

Ousmane Dembele

According to some sources, Ousmane Dembele has no intention of signing a new contract with Barcelona. The forward needs to go to a club where he can be the star man, and where his talents will be able to thrive in front of an appreciative crowd.

Whether or not Newcastle has enough draws is another question. With so many other clubs in the running to sign the 24-year-old, it could be tough to convince him. But as the old saying goes, money talks, and we could see Dembele on North Eastern shores very soon.

He would add an attacking threat to the side and could link up well with the likes of Callum Wilson and St Maximan.

Philippe Coutinho

A player who is endlessly linked with a move back to the Premier League, the rumours have already begun to swirl around the possibility of Coutinho being convinced to join The Magpies.

It seems unlikely that this will happen, but if Newcastle is willing to pay the money then they could land one of the most naturally talented footballers around.

Although it has never happened as many would have imagined for Coutinho, he is still a player with huge talent that could be capable of lighting up the Premier League again after departing from Liverpool several years ago.

James Tarkowski

Defence is something that Newcastle really has to focus on in order to improve and avoid relegation. It is going to be tough, but they need characters who are tough and used to digging in to grind out a result.

James Tarkowski is a prime example of this sort of player. He has performed well for Burnley for a number of years and is undoubtedly a very talented defender.

The best news about this player is that he will be available for free, and could choose to go to Newcastle himself provided the wages are satisfactory.

This takes some of the pressure away from Newcastle and would be a win-win signing in many ways.

Defence is something that Eddie Howe hasn’t always been excellent at prioritizing in terms of his managerial ability, so he should try to focus on this and look at bringing in some experienced players who can implement his plans well.

Kieran Trippier

Newcastle has been linked with Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier, with some sources claiming that he is the first man Eddie Howe wants to sign in January.

This would be a good signing, and Trippier has shown his ability numerous times over the years.

The English defender hasn’t played in the Premier League since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 and might be keen on a return. But if Newcastle goes down to the Championship this will not be so appealing.

He is 31 years old now, so this should be considered. His best years may be behind him but he can still perform at the top level and could be the answer for the next few years.

Divock Origi

A Divock Origi loan has also been considered, though it is unclear whether Liverpool would be keen on this idea.

Despite not being a starting player for LFC, Origi has proved to be an extremely useful and capable player numerous times for the reds.

He was key in their Champions League-winning campaign of 2019 and has provided numerous memorable moments such as the last-minute winner against Everton in which Jordan Pickford fumbled the ball.

With Origi being such a useful player to have within the squad, it is unlikely that Klopp would be willing to hand him to Newcastle for a loan spell.

Despite this, the striker may feel that his time on the sidelines is coming to an end. He might want to be a regular starter who leads a team throughout their season, and with the wages, Newcastle could offer this could happen.

Ross Barkley

It hasn’t quite worked out for Ross Barkley at Chelsea FC. Despite featuring in some brilliant moments for the club, he has never quite found his feet.

He is often linked with a move away, and this could be a good signing for Newcastle. The key thing is to ensure that he doesn’t get injured, as injuries have certainly been a big problem for the Liverpool-born midfielder.

If he finally becomes the player he could be, then this has the potential to be an incredible signing. But don’t hold your breath.

Final Thoughts

The influx of money that Newcastle received was initially without any shortcomings. The major problem they now face is that they are in a relegation battle, and not many players would choose to join a club in January that could be relegated by May.

If the club wins its next few games, it could change this image and become a more attractive proposition. But everyone knows how rich they are now, so clubs will be looking to get every penny they can from the Geordies.
